LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State head football coach Hal Mumme said he was happy with how spring practice wrapped up Saturday night after the Crimson and White game at Aggie Memorial Stadium.

Now comes the wait for the fall, when the Aggies begin preparations for Mumme's fourth, and perhaps most important, year of his tenure with the program.

The Crimson was the defense and the White was the offense in the 35-17 win for the defense.

"We got out of the spring healthy and that was key," Mumme said. "We're learning to play hard. Our defense made a lot of strides in the last four or five days. You can't accomplish everything in the spring, but we got our defense implemented to the point where we can go into the summer and know where we need to improve. We also improved in our kicking game and got young players lots of reps."

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team held its annual spring game Saturday, April 26, at Aggie Memorial Stadium as the NMSU defense defeated the NMSU offense 35-17 in a four-quarter battle on the gridiron.

McDermott finished the game going 32-of-49 for 281 yards and two touchdowns, as Julius Fleming tallied nine catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Marcus Anderson grabbed seven passes while LaVorick Williams brought in eight. Defensively, the Aggies tallied six sacks as Nick Paden led the way with eight tackles and a sack.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State football team went through 110 plays in its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday at Aggie Memorial Stadium and freshman wide receiver LaVorick Williams highlighted the day with his seven receptions for 167 yards and one touchdown.

The Aggies “Air Raid” offense threw for 633 yards on the day and four touchdowns while the running back corps ran for another 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Head coach Hal Mumme said afterwards that he is pleased with where his team is at right now following two weeks of spring football.

“I thought we got a lot better as a team today,” Mumme said. “The quality of play was good toady. We ran 110 plays and there was no drop-off in intensity of play all day and that’s contributed to our increased depth.”

SAN JOSE, CA - New Mexico State quarterback Chase Holbrook broke the school’s all-time passing record on a 50-yard pass play to Derek Dubois in the opening minutes of the game against San Jose State, but the Aggies couldn’t match the Spartans scoring, as NMSU fell 51-17 Saturday at Spartan Stadium.

The Aggies fall to 4-7 and 1-5 in WAC play on the season, while the Spartans move to 4-6, 3-3 on the year.

Holbrook finished with a game-high 318 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes. Derek Dubois led the Aggie receiving corps with 87 yards on four catches, while Justine Buries carried the ball 14 times for 62 yards. Dante Floyd led the Aggie defense with 12 tackles, recording his 100th tackle of his career and had three tackles for a loss.

Wide receiver Brandon Allen broke the schools record of consecutive games with a catch (42) as he hauled in four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.

RUSTON, LA. - Freshmen quarterback J.J. McDermott threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start for the New Mexico State football team, but Louisiana Tech came back from a 21-9 fourth quarter deficit to win, 22-21 Saturday night at Joe Aillet Stadium.

For the first three and a half quarters of the game, the Aggies had dominated the Bulldogs and held 12 point lead with under seven minutes to play. But two touchdown passes from La Tech quarterback Zac Champion put the Bulldogs up by one, 22-21, with 1:53 left to play.

The Aggies faced a fourth-and-one on their own 40 yard-line and McDermott’s pass to Chris Williams was broken up giving the Bulldogs the victory. La Tech improves to 2-4 on the year and 1-2 in WAC play while the loss pushes the Aggies record back to 3-4 and 0-2 in conference play.

The Aggies couldn't hang on to a 12 point lead with 6:55 left in the game as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs stole victory from the Aggies in Ruston tonight. J.J. McDermott had a stellar outing for the Aggies, throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions but it wasn't enough to hang on to the victory.
