LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State women's golf head coach Jackie Booth announced Monday that the university has hired former Aggie men's golf standout Danny Bowen as an assistant coach for the women's golf program.

Bowen, a native of Albuquerque, played golf at NM State from 2002-06. As an Aggie, he helped the men's golf program win four tournaments, including two conference championships. Bowen was a three-time conference first team honoree and was also invited to participate in the NCAA West Regional Golf Tournament as an individual on two separate occasions.

"Bowen is a great alumnus from NMSU and grew up in the state of New Mexico so it's great to have him continue his career here," Booth said. "He also played a little professionally so it will be great to use his expertise from all levels. I believe he will help our team grow tremendously in all areas."  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After five years as the co-head coach for the New Mexico State women's golf team alongside Paul Brilliant, Jackie Booth now heads up the team on her own, the university announced, Thursday. Brilliant retired at the end of the 2011-12 season.

This is the second stint for Booth as the Aggie women's golf head coach. Booth was also the head coach at NM State from 1992 until the 1996-97 season, before leaving to the University of New Mexico where she coached for 10 years. She returned to NM State in 2007 to assist Brilliant. In 2011, Brilliant and Booth earned Western Athletic Conference Co-Head Coach of the Year honors.  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State softball team and women’s golf team were honored by the NCAA along with more than 950 other Division I teams for their achievement in the classroom with the Public Recognition Awards announced Wednesday morning. This is the second year in a row that the women’s golf team received the honor and the first for the softball program.

“We have always tried to have a perfect score,” head women’s golf coach Paul Brilliant said. “We are just keeping the same tradition. Our philosophy is that they are student-athletes. I have told my players that they have little chance of getting on the professional tour without a degree, but with a college degree, the chances raise by 100%.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women's golf team recently received the NCAA Public Recognition Award, which is bestowed on the teams that have an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all teams in their respective sport.

The Aggie women's golf team owns a 3.60 team grade point average and that is the highest of any team at NM State. The team's APR is 1,000, which is high above the NCAA standard of 925.

"We have high-expectations in the classroom for the student-athletes that join our team," head coach Paul Brilliant said. As a sophomore, Demi Mak is a driving force on the greens for New Mexico State's women's golf team. After being named 2011 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and tying for fourth place in the WAC championship, she has already proved to be a great asset for the team.

A native of Hong Kong, Mak is a very consistent player. After 34 rounds played last season she averaged 75.82 strokes per round. Head coach Paul Brilliant is high on Mak and knows that he can depend on her for consistent low scores.

"Golf is a very up and down sport, but she (Mak) maintains," Brilliant said. "Even when she is not playing so well, she always keeps her scores low."

Earlier this week (Sept. 12-13) at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic Mak placed 38th, with a total score of 277(73-77-77). The highlight of the tournament was when Mak made a Hole in One from 137 yards out, on her first shot of the second round.  Continue Reading This Post >>

CORAL SPRINGS, FL - The National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Teams for Division I, II & III were announced Friday, July 8th with a total of 566 women’s collegiate golfers recognized with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.

New Mexico State had three players earn All-American Scholar honors. Senior Apinporn Swaschuto (Individualized Studies), freshman Demi Jun Wi Mak (Foreign Languages) and freshman Mieke Christine Canan (Animal Range Science) were among just eight women's golfers from the Western Athletic Conference to earn the prestigious honor along with three players from Idaho and two from Boise State.

The trio also recently earned Academic All-WAC honors.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NCAA announced the fields for the 2011 NCAA Regional Tournaments, Monday, April 25 and the New Mexico State women's golf team has been selected to play in the West Regional Tournament, May 5-7.

The Aggies, who were selected as an at-large bid, are making their first NCAA Regional Tournament appearance since 2006 when they finished 15. The team is set to join 23 other teams in Auburn, Wash. to play on the par-72, 6,266 yard Washington National Golf Club Course.

"This is exciting for us and we all believe that we worked hard to get to this point," head coach Paul Brilliant said. "This team is capable of so much and I am proud that they are able to compete in this tournament."

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State's Suteera Chanachai has been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for April 4-10.

Chanachai, a senior from Bangkok, Thailand (Demonstration Yamhumghang University), tied for third place at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic held April 4-5 in Chandler, Ariz. She shot an even-par 216 (76-67-73) to finish three strokes behind the leaders. Her 67 in the second round was a career-best. Chanachai recorded 10 birdies in the tournament, the second most out of the 122 participants. Her score helped New Mexico State to a second place finish in the 23-team field. It is the first time in her career that Chanachai has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State freshman Demi Mak has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week by the league office for her play during the week of March 21-27.

Mak, a freshman from Hong Kong (The International School of Macau), won the BYU at Entrada Classic that was held in St. George, Utah, March 21-22. Mak shot a 2-over par 218 (74-74-70) to win the tournament by four strokes. Her 70 in round three was one of just four under par recorded by anyone in the field of 81 players during the tournament and was a career-low for the freshman.

"Demi is a good player and she has been working hard on improving her game," head coach Paul Brilliant said. "She is very deserving of the award and we are all proud of her. It is exciting to know that she still has three years of eligibility left after this year."  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women's golf team will be participating in the Third Annual Golf Week Conference Challenge, Sept. 18-21 at Red Sky Golf Club- Fazio Course in Wolcott, Colo. They will be competing against the top teams from 18 different Division I conferences.

The Aggies will be taking on No. 15 Oklahoma out of the Big 12 conference, followed by the Big East's No. 18 Notre Dame, the Big West's No. 23 UC Davis, Pac-10's No. 29 Oregon, West Coast's No. 31 Pepperdine, No. 32 TCU out of MWC, No. 34 Mississippi out of SEC and No. 39 Denver out of The Sun Belt Conference.

"It is a matter of good recruiting and good coaching, good facilities, and good weather." head coach Brilliant said. The Aggies have improved and moved up in the rankings this year placing them higher then University of New Mexico as well as their I-10 rival UTEP.
