Aggie Men's Golf Team Comes From 10 Strokes Behind To Win Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate

Written By: NMSU Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State men’s golf team won the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate for the second time in three years at the NMSU Golf Course, Tuesday, Oct. 28.

The Aggies went into the final round tied for seventh, but fired a 10-under-par to take home the team trophy with a three-round total of 9-over-par 861 (296-291-274). The Aggies were down 10 strokes to Denver, who had the lead after two rounds, but head coach Scott Lieberwirth had a feeling his team could make a come back on their home course.

"As frustrating as it was yesterday this makes it that much more rewarding," Lieberwirth said. "It was just the kind of performance today that we knew we had to play to win. We knew we had play some of our best golf today, and we did that."
The Daily Aggie :: 04/30/08 :: Championship Edition

Congratulations to the Aggie men's golf team. The Aggies brought home their second WAC title in three years holding off Boise State while playing short-handed. The Aggies were only playing with four of their five players (meaning all scores count). Kevin Lozares fired a 74 to lead the way for the team which finished at +27 overall (+15 for the day). At the time that we are writing this, the Aggies are five shots ahead of Boise State with one Boise State player left on the course. Given that the Aggies are five shots ahead and the BSU player has just three holes left (a par 5, par 3 and par 4) and as decent golfers ourselves, we can safely say there is no way he's making up five shots in three holes (he would have to have an eagle, ace, birdie combo finish just to tie). So with that said we are projecting with 99.999% assuredness that the Aggies are 2008 WAC Conference Champions! CONGRATULATIONS AGGIES!

UPDATE: It's official! Boise State's Troy Merritt, the final BSU player on the course, finished par, bogey, birdie and claims medalist honors after finishing the tournament 7-under par. The Aggies claim a five stroke victory and are now headed to the 2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championships Regionals.

Written by: NMSU Athletic Dept.

STEVINSON, CA – With three players finishing in the top-10, the New Mexico State men's golf team won the University of Colorado-Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stevinson, Calif., Tuesday, April 8.

The Aggies posted the best team score in the final round, coming from two strokes out of the lead after 36 holes to post an eight-stroke victory. It was NMSU's first win of the year, and its first since the Aggies won their own Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in October 2006.

NMSU finished with a team score of 8-over-par, 872 (292-291-289) after registering a 1-over 289 on Tuesday. That bested No. 43 and second round leader St. Mary's (Calif.), which finished with an 880 score, with the host Buffaloes remaining in third with an 886 total.

NMSU Men’s Golf Ties For Fourth At Sycuan Collegiate Invitational

Written by: NMSU Athletic Dept.

EL CAJON, CA - The New Mexico State men's golf team moved up the leaderboard and tied for fourth at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in El Cajon, Calif., Tuesday, Oct. 23.

The Aggies fired rounds of 303-308-289 for a 36-over-par 900 to tie for fourth place with Cal Poly. Senior Matt Edwards (Henderson, Nev.) led the way for NMSU as he finished in sixth on the individual leader board. Edwards carded a 3-under-par 69 in the final round that included an eagle on hole No. 5 and birdies on No. 4 and 17.

"We played well top to bottom today," head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. "This is two weeks in a row for Matt to play the way he did and we are sort of riding his shoulders."

Junior Kevin Lozares (Mountain View, Calif.) was the only other Aggie to finish in the top-20 as he tied for 19th was a 9-over-par 225. In the final round of play, he shot nine consecutive pars, followed by two birdies to finish the day at 1-over-par 73.
