Aggies Knock Off No. 23 Colorado State 3-1 To Keep NCAA Tournament Hopes Alive

The Aggie volleyball ventured to Fort Collins, Colo. looking for a statement victory. The Aggies left Fort Collins with exactly that. After falling to No. 3 Hawai'i in three in the WAC Tournament championship finals on Wednesday night, the Aggies rebounded for an impressive 3-1 victory over No. 23 Colorado State to give themselves a much needed marquee victory and a shot at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies recorded 19 kills in set one but attack eight errors allowed Colorado State to take the first set 25-21. The Aggies jumped out to a 24-14 set two lead but had to hold off a furious CSU rally as the Rams closed to within one at 24-23. Aggie Volleyball Sweeps Boise State To Advance To WAC Tournament Championship Match

Erin BirminghamThe Aggie volleyball team used a second set comeback victory to sweep Boise State 25-16, 26-24, 25-10 and advance to the WAC Tournament championship match where they'll have a rematch against No. 3 Hawai'i on Wednesday night.

The Aggies dominated the first set 25-16 as they finished the set with 15 kills and only four attack errors to hit .367. Kayleigh Giddens and Krista Altermatt led the way for the Aggies in the first set with four kills apiece. Altermatt hit .500 in the set finished with no errors in eight attacks.

Set two saw the Aggies fall behind in the match and find themselves facing five set points as they trailed 24-19. After a Kelli Goodan block gave the Aggies a side out, Erin Birmingham began a run on serve and the Aggies picked up the come-from-behind victory winning 26-24.

The third set was all Aggies as NM State used the momentum from their set two victory to propel them to a dominant 25-10 set three win. The Aggies hit .632 in the set recording 14 kills on 19 swings with just two hitting errors and held Boise State to just four kills and forced seven attack errors on 23 swings for a -.130 hitting percentage.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Clinch No. 2 Seed With Sweep Of Fresno State

The Aggie volleyball team closed out the regular season with a sweep of Fresno State in Fresno, Calif. on Saturday night. The Aggies won set one 25-19 followed by a 25-21 set two victory and a 25-22 set three victory.

The Aggies committed just 14 attack errors in the match and were led by Kayleigh Giddens who finished with a match high 13 kills on 27 swings with just four hitting errors finishing with a .333 hitting percentage. Whitney Woods followed up her 19 kills performance against Nevada with an 11 kill performance against the Bulldogs. Woods hit .409 it the match and committed just two hitting errors while adding three block assists. Krista Altermatt finished with nine kills on 27 swings with four hitting errors and added two assists, two service aces, six digs and two block assists.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Take Five Set Battle Over Idaho; Solidify Hold On Second Place In The WAC

Kayleigh GiddensA career high 25 kills from Kayleigh Giddens was just enough as the Aggies won a five set thriller 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13 on Senior Night in the Pan Am. After jumping out to an 8-1 lead early and then a 21-16 lead late in the first set, the Aggies squandered two match point opportunities and Idaho stole set one in extra points 26-24.

The Aggies and Vandals traded points early in set two with the Aggies taking a 14-10 lead. The Aggies extended the lead to 20-14 before closing out the set 25-19.

Set three saw a similar set of events unfold as in set two with the teams trading points early with the Aggies holding a 13-10 lead midway through. Idaho would tie the match at 17 all before the Aggies would go on a 7-0 run behind tough serving from Krista Altermatt to go up 24-17. The Aggies closed out the set on a kill by senior opposite hitter Kelli Goodan, her only kill of the night.

Set four saw the Aggies jump out to a quick 5-1 lead and then led 12-7 midway through the set. Idaho would go on a run 12-5 run to lead the set 19-17. After an Aggie timeout, back-to-back points for the Aggies would tie the set at 19. The teams would trade the next six points leaving the set tied at 22 before back to back attack errors by the Aggies gave Idaho set point at 24-22. The Aggies would stave off one set point but then an attack error by Whitney Woods gave Idaho the set 25-23.

The fifth and deciding set saw the Aggies once again jump out to a quick lead, this team leading 9-3. However, a 9-3 run by Idaho would tie the fifth and deciding set at 12. After an attack error by Kayleigh Giddens gave the Vandals a 13-12 lead, kills by Kayleigh Giddens and Erin Birmingham gave the Aggies a 14-13 lead and match point. Aggies Sweep Broncos To Stay In Second Place In The WAC

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team dominated Boise State picking up another sweep (25-16, 25-23, 25-12) in the Pan American Center, Thursday, Nov. 5.

The Aggies go to 15-8 overall and 10-3 in Western Athletic Conference play as junior Kayleigh Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) tallied a match-high 15 kills and sophomore libero Kelsi Phillips (Scottsdale, Ariz.) marked a match-high 14 digs.

The Aggies posted a season-high .356 hitting percentage, while holding the Broncos to a .109 hitting percentage. NM State also out-blocked BSU 10-3 with senior Erin Birmingham (Riverside, Mo.) leading the way with four total blocks.

"I was really happy with our start tonight and being at home really helped," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Overall, I was really happy with the way we played as a team. I thought our serving was a lot better tonight and we have really been working hard on that over this past week."  Continue Reading This Post >>
