It's Good To Be Back At The Pan Am

It wasn't so much that we won against Texas Southern on Sunday. It was more of what we saw on the court that impressed the majority of die-hard Aggie volleyball fans. And, in speaking to Coach Jordan after the game, I told him that I was really impressed. With what you say?

The position depth of this team.

With the 4th game in 3 days, Coach Jordan showcased (for lack of a better word) some of his new talent. Lindsey Yon, who had a great weekend, wasn't even in uniform. As she is still re-habbing her right arm, she was wearing what I think was an electro-therapy 'thingy'. (I'm not a doctor and don't play one on tv.) We saw Kim, Briana and Jordan for 2 games, Krystal and Krista for 1.

Stepping up was sophomore Kelli Goodan who led the defense with 11 kills and a hit percentage of .529, followed by Whitney Phillips with 9 kills and a .667%. Freshman Alex Steinmetz from LC High got her chance to play her first game in front of a hometown crowd and she didn't disappoint with 8 kills and a .312%.

Let's head to the serve line because this is where we were blown away. Over the weekend, Coach said that they needed to step up and serve a little better. I think they heard that message loud and clear. Whitney Philips got up to the serve line and launched 4 aces. When Coach talked about her 'cannon of an arm' at the First Serve banquet, he wasn't joking. Not to be outdone, Brynja Rodgers stepped up with 5 service aces.

Setting had been a concern in the spring for some of us. We weren't sure what was going to happen there. No cause for concern now with Brynja and Alyssa Gintant who had 21 and 19 sets respectively.

I'm not going to get into the team stats except to say that the errors were down which is a very good thing. What we saw last night from the stands was a team that is playing well as a team - the communication was very good from where we were sitting, they looked comfortable out there and with each other. The "Mike-o-Meter"** didn't go off at all, either.

Coming Up:
The Aggies travel to Houston for games against Texas on Saturday and Houston on Sunday. They come back to the Pan Am to play UNM on 9/4. There will be a Sideout meeting after the UNM game.

On The Air:
Kyle D. welcomed Jackie Choi (now Parker) to the air last night on AM 570 and from what folks have told me today, she did a wonderful job!

See you at the match!

**Mike-O-Meter will be explained at a later date :)
