TUCSON, AZ - The New Mexico State women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision against Albany in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday afternoon.

"It was another tough one for us," said head coach Rob Baarts. "We're starting to move the ball well and creating a lot of opportunities but just not scoring. Unfortunately, when that happens the other team goes down and scores."

NM State (0-2-0) had a chance to start the scoring, but a shot from Micaela Milavec in the 24th minute went wide before Albany (2-0-0) was able to get on the board in the 35th when Mariah Williams scored.

The Aggies had a few opportunities to tie it up before halftime, but Kelly Burton's shot in the 39th minute went wide while freshman Sarah Trent's shot was blocked by the Albany defense before it could reach goal in the 41st minute.

Albany came out of the half firing, with shots in the 52nd and 59th minutes before Williams was able to connect on her second goal of the game in the 60th to give Albany a 2-0 lead.

Aileen Galicia gave NM State hope when she beat Andrea Leitner to bring the Aggies back within one, 2-1, in the 86thminute. However, Albany was able to stretch its lead to 3-1 when Katie Gowing headed in a goal off a corner kick in the 88th minute.

"A lot of little detail stuff we're still working on but the upside is the ball is moving very well, the girls are starting to understand concepts and once we put it together, we're going to be tough to beat," added Baarts.

Mia Montano made four saves in her collegiate debut while Leitner finished the game with one. New Mexico State was outshot 14-5 and Albany held the edge in corner kicks, 4-1.

NM State is back in action on Friday, Aug. 24, at 8 p.m. (MT) as it travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., to take on Northern Arizona. The Aggies then return home for their home-opener against Pacific on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m.
