SEATTLE, WA - Layla Todd scored two goals to power the Aggies past Bakersfield 3-0 in the first round of the 2014 WAC Women’s Soccer Tournament.

“Our team has been battling injuries, tough opponents and weather and to get this win feels good,” NM State assistant coach Niki Brooks said. “This is the healthiest and most confident we’ve been all year and it seems that everything is starting to come around.”

The opening 20 minutes of the first half was evenly matched, however, at 22:23 Layla Todd received a perfect pass from Katie Smith and raced down the right sideline and slipped the ball right by the Bakersfield goalkeeper.

The Aggies went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage, but were outshot by Bakersfield (4-16-1) 13-5 in the first half.

“We’ve played pretty good defense all year and tonight was a microcosm of how we play,” Brooks said. “We emphasize defense in practice and we know that if we want to have a season that lasts well into November we must play solid defense.”

The majority of the second half seesawed back and forth until 84:11 when Jennae Cambra, the Aggies all-time leader in goals scored with 24, blasted a shot from 20 yards out to give NM State breathing room.

Five minutes later Todd added the final goal of the match and clinched the Aggies spot into the next round.

Taylor Rice was fantastic in goal for the Aggies. The junior stopped four shots and earned her first shutout of the season.

“Today she was phenomenal and she’s battled all year,” Brooks said. “She’s battled injuries and to see her improve on a daily basis is great to see. Taylor is becoming the goalkeeper that we know she is.”

The Aggies (5-16-0) return to the pitch Friday, Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m. against top-seed and tournament host Seattle U (12-4-2).
