LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State men's golf head coach Scott Lieberwirth announced the signing of Gaston De La Torre to a national letter of intent, Tuesday, Nov. 20.

De La Torre (Brush Prairie, Wash.) signed a national letter of intent to attend school and play at NMSU beginning in the fall of 2008. Lieberwirth knows he signed a good student and player and is excited that he is coming to NMSU.

"Gaston (De La Torre) is a good player and we are very happy that he is coming here," Lieberwirth. "I believe that he will come here and compete right away."

De La Torre won the 2A state medal in 2006 while he played at Hockinson High School and was the No. 1 player for his team from 2004-06 and should be the top player in his final season with the team. He was named high school All-league Player of the Year in 2006.

"He was ranked No. 133 in the country, which is a pretty high ranking and that shows that we got ourselves a good player," Lieberwirth said. "He has also played in a lot of good tournaments, against a lot of tough competition, so he should be ready to go when he gets here."

De La Torre also won the Oregon State Match Play in July of 2006, the South West Washington Spring Classic in 2006, the Prairie Invitational in Nov. 2005, and the OGA Tournament of Champions, Sept. 16, 2006. He finished fifth at the OGA Stroke Play Championship, July 2006, seventh at the Portland City Bob Allard Memorial, Aug. 2006, fourth at the Prairie Invitational, Sept. 2006, third at the IJGT, Oct. 2006 and fifth at the IJGT Mid-Season Championship, Jan. 2007.

Other accomplishments include being the co-holder of the course record at The Cedars as he shot a 64, and he also played in The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach in 2004. He also won the Boys Junior Americas Cup in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
