The Daily Aggie :: New Mexico State Seeding Scenarios :: Version 3.0

After the completion of Thursday night's WAC men's basketball games in which Idaho defeated Fresno State to finish 9-7, Nevada squeaked by Louisiana Tech to improve to 8-7 and Hawai'i slipped past San Jose State to finish 8-7 (sweeping the season series with SJSU) the seeding scenario for the Aggies as well as their potential opponent in the WAC Tournament next week have become a bit clearer.

The Aggies still control their own destiny for a shot at the 3-seed and a bye into the quarterfinals and all they need is a win on Saturday. As always, these are not official and are based on what we believe to be the correct interpretation of the WAC's tiebreaker rules.

The following are what we believe to be the three possibilities for the Aggies' seed and their potential path to the title:

No. 3: NMSU defeats Nevada and finishes 9-7. They would play the winner of the 6 vs. 7 game and if they win would likely face Boise State in the semifinals (assuming BSU wraps up the 2-seed on Saturday with a win over San Jose State)

No. 5: NMSU loses to Nevada and finishes 8-8, Idaho finishes 9-7 (3-seed), Nevada finishes 9-7 (4-seed), Hawai'i finishes 8-8 (NMSU gets tiebreaker due to sweep of Idaho, Hawai'i was swept by Idaho). The Aggies play the 8-seed (either Fresno State or SJSU depending on the outcome of the Boise State game) and if they win, they would face Nevada in the quarterfinals and if they advance to the semis, they would face Utah State

No. 6: NMSU loses to Nevada and finishes 8-8, Nevada, Idaho and Hawai'i each finish 9-7. The Aggies play the 7-seed (either Fresno State or SJSU depending on the outcome of the Boise State game). Should they advance, they would face 3-seed Idaho and if they advance they would face 2-seed Boise State in the semifinals.
