The Aggies bid farewell to their two seniors Kayleigh Giddens and Whitney Woods on Wednesday night and Giddens recorded 14 kills to become the Aggies' all-time single season kills leader with 513 kills but the Aggies were swept by Utah State 3-0 losing 25-21, 19-25 and 20-25 to fall to 18-12 and 12-4 in WAC play as they head to Las Vegas, NV for the WAC Tournament.
Set one saw runs by both teams as Utah State jumped out to a 7-4 lead before New Mexico State would put together a 7-1 run to go up 11-8. The Aggies would push their lead to four points up 13-9 after a kill by Whitney Woods but Utah State would put together a 6-0 run to go head 15-13. New Mexico State would answer Utah State's run with a 6-1 run to go up 19-16 as the Aggies would get a pair of kills by Kayleigh Giddens, Whitney Woods and a double-block by Woods and Desiree Scott as the run was capped by a kill from Rocio Gutierrez. Utah State would go on a 3-1 run to tie the set at 20-20. New Mexico State would take a 21-20 lead on a kill by Kelsey Brennan but the UtAgs would run off the final five points of the set to take set one 25-21.
The Aggies fell behind 8-2 early in set two and still trailed by six down 12-6. The Aggies would trim the Utah State lead to four points at 15-11 after an attack error by USU's Liz McArthur. The Aggies would still trail by four points down 18-14 after an attack error by McArthur. Utah State would push their lead to six points at 22-16 and put the set away winning 25-19 on a kill by McArthur.
The Aggies held a brief lead at 3-2 in the third set but a 5-0 run by Utah State would vie them a 7-3 lead. New Mexico State would go on a 6-2 run to tie the set 9-9 forcing a Utah State timeout. The Aggies would take a 12-10 lead on a kill by Rocio Gutierrez and a service ace from Kelsi Phillips but the set would see at tie at 13-13 after a service error by Whitney Woods. Utah State would score three more points to take a 16-13 lead prompting an Aggie timeout. Utah State would continue to lead by three points at 20-17. The Aggies would get to within two points at 20-18 after a kill by Amanda Tonga but the UtAgs would score three consecutive points to take a 23-18 lead. The Aggies would draw to within four at 24-20 but Utah State would close out the set 25-20 after setter Jennah DeVries was called for a double-contact.
Kayleigh Giddens finished with 14 kills and seven digs but hit just .045 on the night. Fellow senior Whitney Woods finished with nine kills and seven digs in her final home match. The Aggies hit just .040 in the match committing 31 errors and were blocked 15 times.
Liz McArthur finished with 10 kills and 12 digs while Shantell Durrant finished with 10 kills and eight block assists and hit .444 in the match.
The Aggies head to Las Vegas for the WAC Tournament where they have a bye into the semifinal round where they will face the winner of the 3 vs. 6 seed match on Monday night.
