Aggie Volleyball Swept By Boise State

The Aggie volleyball team was denied their 19th victory of the season falling in three sets to Boise State on Saturday night. The Aggies dropped the first set 25-20, lost in extra points 26-24 in the second set and then fell 25-23 in the third set. The Aggies fall to 18-11 overall and 12-3 in WAC play as the Broncos' victory snapped a 13-match winning streak by the Aggies in the series.

Kayleigh Giddens recorded 11 kills on the night tying her for the single-season record at 499 kills, however, the Aggies hit just .032 as a team committing 27 attack errors.

The Aggies and Broncos played evenly in the first set early on as the set was tied 8-8. The Aggies would take a 10-8 lead after a kill by Giddens and an attack error by Cailin Fellows but the Broncos would tie the set at 10 and continue on a run to take a three point lead at 13-10. They would extend the lead over the Aggies to four points going up 15-11 and would push the lead to five at 17-12. The Aggies would score three in a row to force a Bronco timeout but the Broncos would push their lead back to five points at 22-17. The Aggies would close to within three points at 23-20 after a service error by Breann Nesselhuf but attack errors by Kelsey Brennan and Desiree Scott would give the set to the Broncos 25-20.

The second set saw 17 ties and six lead changes as the two teams were evenly matched through the first 18 points. With the score tied 9-9, the Broncos would go on a 3-0 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Aggies would answer with kills from Kelsey Brennan and Kayleigh Giddens to trim the lead to one at 12-11. The Aggies would tie the set at 13 and the teams would see ties at 14, 15 and 17 points. The Aggies would go on a 3-0 run to take a 20-17 lead but Boise State would answer back with a 3-0 run to tie things up at 20. With the set tied at 24-all the Broncos would get back-to-back kills from Alisha Young to take the set 26-24 and a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third set saw the two teams once again battle closely as the set was tied at 6-6. The Broncos would take an 8-6 lead but the Aggies would tie things up at 9-9. The Aggies would take an 11-9 lead but the Broncos would go on a 3-0 run to take a 12-11 lead. Neither team would be able to separate from the other as the two teams were tied at 16-16. Boise State would take a slim 18-17 and maintain the lead at 20-19. After a service error by Jennah DeVries gave the Broncos a two point advantage, the Aggies would draw back to within one on a kill by Kayleigh Giddens. The Aggies would take a one point advantage at 23-22 on a kill by Rocio Gutierrez but the Broncos would finish the match scoring the final three points to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

Along with Kayleigh Giddens, Boise State's Alisha Young was the only other player in double-digit kills also finishing with 11. Young finished with the best hitting percentage on the court finished with a match-high .348 with just three errors. Kelsey Breannan and Boise State's Cailin Fellows each recorded nine kills. Rocio Gutierrez finished with just six kills after recording a career-high 17 against Idaho. Fiona Jones finished with eight kills for the Broncos.

The Aggies were out-blocked in the match 13-10 but out-dug the Broncos 39-33 with Kelsi Phillips recording a match-high 15.

The Aggies return home for their regular season finale against Utah State on Wednesday night in the Pan American Center.
