Aggie Volleyball Defeats Fresno State 3-1

The Aggie volleyball team survived a bit of a challenge from the Fresno State Bulldogs overcoming a fourth set deficit to take home a 3-1 victory on Thursday night. The Aggies won the first set 25-20 but fell in the second set 25-22. The Aggies rebounded to crush Fresno State 25-15 in the third set and then overcame a late 18-15 deficit to take set four 25-21.

The Aggies led the first set early 7-4 but the Bulldogs rallied to tie the set at 7-7 on a kill by Brianna Clarke. The Aggies would go on an 8-1 run to take a 15-8 lead and pushed their lead to 17-10 but the Bulldogs would make a strong push cutting the Aggie lead to just two points at 19-17. As they had done in the first set in Fresno, the Aggies would take a three point lead at 22-19 however this time they would not allow a Bulldog rally and finished off the set winning 25-20.

The second set saw the Aggies and Bulldogs battle closely through the early part of the set with the two teams tied at 7-7. Fresno State would go on a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead but the Aggies would tie the set at 13-13. With the set tied 15-15 the Bulldogs would go on a 4-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. After a timeout by the Aggies, they would cut the lead back down to two points at 19-17. However, the Bulldogs would go on a 3-0 run to push their lead to five points at 22-17. The Aggies would cut the lead to just two at 24-22 but Taylor Horton would record a kill to end the set 25-22.

The Aggies would dominate the third set winning 25-15 after the set saw seven ties early. The Aggies would forge ahead 12-10 and pushed their lead to six points at 20-14 before finishing off the set. The Aggies would record 16 kills agains just four attack errors to hit .387 in the set.

The Aggies would trail the Bulldogs for most of the fourth set and faced a three point deficit at 18-15 before tying the set at 18-18. The Aggies would finish out the set winning 25-21 and winning the match 3-1.

The Aggies' four All-Conference performers carried the Aggies as Kayleigh Giddens recorded a match-high 23 kills. Whitney Woods posted her best match of the season finishing with 15 kills and a .522 hitting percentage. Kelsey Brennan added 11 kills and setter Jennah DeVries recorded 53 assists, six digs and a service ace.

The Aggies finished the match hitting .273 behind a .387 attack percentage in the third set and a .395 attack percentage in the fourth set. The Aggies recorded at least 16 kills in each of the four sets.

Marissa Brand led the way for the Bulldogs with 12 kills and eight digs and hit .206 for the match. Kelli Parker added 10 kills but hit just .147 while Brianna Clarke finished with nine kills.

The Aggies outblocked the Bulldogs 11-7 and recorded four service aces to Fresno State's three.

The Aggies return to action on Saturday night when they host San Jose State at 7:00 p.m. in the Pan American Center.
