The Aggie volleyball team was swept by No. 5 Hawai'i on Sunday night in Honolulu as the Wahine took the match by winning the first set 25-18, the second set 25-10 and then holding off the Aggies 25-23 in the third set. The Wahine hit .384 on the match while the Aggie offense struggled hitting just .140. Kayleigh Giddens was the only Aggie in double-digit kills with a match-high 12 as she hit .194 for the match. Kanani Danielson was the only Wahine is double-digit kills with 11 and hit .240 for the match but also added three service aces, a solo block and two block assists.
The Aggies held an early 7-6 lead on the Wahine in the first set. The two score would be tied at 8-8 on a kill by Whitney Woods but four straight points by the Wahine would give them a 12-8 lead forcing an Aggie timeout. The Aggies would cut the lead back down to two points twice at 18-16 and 19-17 but the Wahine would get a kill by Kanani Danielson followed by a service ace by Danielson to take a 21-17 lead. The Aggies would get a kill from Kayleigh Giddens to cut the lead to three at 21-18 but the Wahine would rattle off four straight points to take the first set 25-18.
The second set would be all Wahine as after an early 2-2 tie, the Wahine would go on a 10-1 run to take a 12-3 lead. The Aggies would be unable to mount any attack as the Wahine extended their lead to 12 points at 17-5. The Aggies would finally hit double-digits on an attack error by Kanani Danielson but with the Wahine leading 21-10 the Aggies had little margin for error. The Wahine would win the final four points of the set behind kills by Chanteal Satele and a pair by Michelle Waber and a service ace by Alex Griffiths.
The Aggies would attempt to stave off the sweep in the third set as they would hang tough with the Wahine tying the set at 2-2 and then again at 5-5 after the Wahine had recorded three straight points. The teams would tie the set at 7-7, 8-8, 10-10 and 11-11 before the Wahine would grab a two point lead at 13-11 behind a kill by Brittany Hewitt and an attack error by Amanda Tonga. The Aggies would cut the Wahine lead to one at 17-16 but a service error by Kayleigh Giddens once again gave the Wahine a two point cushion. Hawai'i would reach match point at 24-19 after an attack by Kelsey Brennan was blocked by Kanani Danielson and Alexis Forsythe, however, the Aggies would put together one final run scoring on kills by Kelsey Brennan and then back-to-back kills by Kayleigh Giddens. The Wahine would take a timeout up 24-22 but after an attack error by Danielson cut the Wahine lead to one at 24-23, Danielson would put the match away with her 11th kill of the match.
Kelsey Brennan finished the match with five kills but also had four attack errors hitting .059. She added two digs and a block assist. No other Aggie had more than three kills and Desiree Scott, Amanda Tonga, Whitney Woods and Michelle Kuester each recorded three kills. Kelsi Phillips led the Aggies with seven digs.
After torching the Aggies for 11 kills on 12 swings in their first meeting, Brittany Hewitt once again punished the Aggies finishing with eight kills on 11 swings hitting .727 on the match. Emily Hartong and Michelle Waber each finished with seven kills and hit .400 and .500 respectively.
After failing to record a block in the first meeting, the Aggies finished with four total blocks but were outblocked by the Wahine who finished with seven total blocks.
The Aggies fall to 15-10 on the season and 9-2 in WAC play while Hawai'i improves to 21-1 and 11-0 in conference play.
