Aggie Volleyball Holds Off Boise State 3-2

It looked easy at times and it looked hard at times but in the end the Aggie volleyball team came away with a 3-2 victory over visiting Boise State on Thursday night to improve to 5-1 in WAC play and 11-9 overall. The Aggies dropped the first set 25-20 before winning sets two and three 25-19 and 25-12. The Broncos forced the fifth set by winning set four 25-21 but the Aggies would prevail winning the fifth set easily 15-7.

Kelsey Brennan took over for the Aggies in the fifth and deciding set scoring the final five points of the set via a block assist, three consecutive kills and then a block assist on match point to help the Aggies extend their winning streak over the Broncos to 13 matches.

The Aggies dropped the first set 25-20 after leading 11-8 early. The set would be tied at 15 points apiece before the the Broncos would go on a 5-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Aggies would trim the lead to two points at 21-19, however, the Broncos would go back up by four points at 23-19 after a Whitney Woods attack was blocked by Sadie Maughan and Cailin Fellows. The Broncos would take the set 25-20.

The Aggies would fall behind early in set two as they trailed 11-7 after a service ace by Fiona Jones. An Aggie timeout would be called by head coach Mike Jordan and out of the timeout the Aggies would go on a 12-2 run to go ahead 19-13. The Broncos would cut into the Aggies' lead cutting it to just three points at 20-17 after a service error by Kayleigh Giddens, a service ace by Boise State's Amanda Remy and an attack error by the Aggies' Michelle Kuester. The Aggies would call a timeout to try to halt the Broncos' momentum and with the Aggies up 21-18, they would finish the set on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-19 as Kayleigh Giddens recorded the kill on set point.

The Aggies would dominate the third set 25-12 as they jumped out to a 7-3 lead early and never looked back. The Broncos would trail 11-7 but an Aggie run of 9-3 would put them ahead 20-10. Michelle Kuester would end the set with a kill to put the Aggies ahead 2-1 in the match.

The Broncos would take set four 25-21 after jumping out to an early 7-3 lead. The Aggies would cut the deficit to one at 8-7 but would get no closer as Boise State would go outscore the Aggies 11-7 to take a five point lead at 19-14. The Aggies would cut the lead to three points twice at 20-17 and 23-20 forcing a pair of Bronco timeouts but would get no closer falling 25-21.

In the fifth and deciding set the Aggies would jump out to a quick 6-3 lead and would lead 8-4 as the teams switched sides. The Aggies would continue to dominate the set as they led 11-6 forcing another Boise State timeout. The Aggies would win four of the final five points to close out the set victory 15-7.

Kelsey Brennan led the way for the Aggies recording 13 kills on 20 swings with no hitting errors for a .650 hitting percentage. She added a solo block and three block assists as the Aggies finished the night with eight total team blocks.

Kayleigh Giddens finished with 13 kills while Whitney Woods and freshman Amanda Tonga added 11 and 10 respectively. Jennah DeVries recorded 47 assists on the night and fed the hot hand of Kelsey Brennan in set five.

Cailin Fellows led the Broncos with 13 kills while Alisha Young added 11. The Aggies held the Broncos to a .117 hitting percentage while hitting .211 on the match.

Each team recorded five service aces while the Aggies had five service errors and Boise State had nine.

The Aggies continue league play on Saturday night when they host Idaho in the Pan American Center for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
