Aggies Knock Off No. 23 Colorado State 3-1 To Keep NCAA Tournament Hopes Alive

The Aggie volleyball ventured to Fort Collins, Colo. looking for a statement victory. The Aggies left Fort Collins with exactly that. After falling to No. 3 Hawai'i in three in the WAC Tournament championship finals on Wednesday night, the Aggies rebounded for an impressive 3-1 victory over No. 23 Colorado State to give themselves a much needed marquee victory and a shot at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies recorded 19 kills in set one but attack eight errors allowed Colorado State to take the first set 25-21. The Aggies jumped out to a 24-14 set two lead but had to hold off a furious CSU rally as the Rams closed to within one at 24-23. The Aggies took set two 25-23 after CSU committed an attack error on the Aggies' 9th match point.

Coming out of the break tied at one set apiece, the Aggies jumped out to an 8-2 lead. However, an 11-6 CSU run pulled the Rams to within one at 14-13. The Aggies would respond with a 6-1 run to push their lead back out to six at 20-14. Colorado State cut the lead to 23-20 before the Aggies sealed the set victory on kill by Kayleigh Giddens and a block by Erin Birmingham and Whitney Woods.

In set four the Aggies once again jumped out to an early lead at 10-6. Once again the Rams would go on a run, this time 6-1 to take a 12-11 lead in the set. The teams would trade points as the set would be tied nine times with the teams deadlocked at 20. Colorado State would score the next two points to go up 22-20. The Aggies would pull to within one at 22-21. Colorado State answered taking a 23-21 lead. The Aggies once again pulled to within one at 23-22. Colorado State gave itself set point at 24-22 but the Aggies would win four straight points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.

The Aggies finished with four players in double-digit kills led by Kayleigh Giddens who had 16 kills on 55 swings with nine hitting errors and also 13 digs for a double-double. Krista Altermatt continued her impressive play after coming back from her ankle injury posting 15 kills on 32 swings with just four hitting errors for a .344 hitting percentage. She also had 13 digs for a double-double.

Erin Birmingham posted 11 kills on 25 swings with three hitting errors for a .320 hitting percentage and Whitney Woods finished with 10 kills on 20 swings with two hitting errors for a .400 hitting percentage. Setter Jennah DeVries had five kills on 14 attacks and added 15 digs to go along with her 49 assists and one service ace. The Aggies hit .236 on the match had five players finish in double-digit digs.

Colorado State hit .225 on the match and had two players with double-digit kills led by Danielle Minch with 17 kills on 48 swings and 11 hitting errors. Megan Plourde finished with 13 kills on 28 swings with just one hitting error (.429).
