The Daily Aggie :: 11/22/09

Today's Daily Aggie comes to you from the airport as we're on our way to Las Vegas for the 2009 WAC Volleyball Tournament. We'll be bringing you coverage from the tournament as the Aggies try to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament

Jonathan GibsonThe Aggie men's basketball team defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State by a score of 83-73 yesterday afternoon. Jonathan Gibson scored a career high 30 points and Jahmar Young added 18 points. Hamidu Rahman scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and hit 7-of-10 free throw attempts. It was a lackluster victory as the Aggies did just enough to beat a clearly overmatched OPSU squad. The Aggie defense didn't hold OPSU under 40 percent shooting as we had hoped they would. OPSU shot 41.9 percent. After allowing OPSU to shoot 50 percent (5-of-10) from behind the three point arc the Aggies clamped down and held OPSU to just 18.2 percent in the second half (2-of-11). The Aggies outrebounded OPSU by just one, holding a 38-37 advantage. Offensively the Aggies shot 44.1 percent in the first half (15-of-34) and 50 percent (12-of-24) in the second half and shot 46.6 percent for the game. The Aggies were solid from the free throw line hitting 23-of-30 attempts and 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) in the second half.

It was not the dominating performance we had hoped to see but at the end of the day a win is a win and a win over a Division II team is still better than a loss to a Division II team. Things do not get any easier for the Aggies as they enter one of the toughest stretches of the season. On Tuesday night they'll face Cal State-Fullerton on the road in the return game from last year's Bracketbusters matchup. Fullerton has already knocked of UCLA, also a future Aggie opponent. After that the Aggies will face North Carolina A&T on Thanksgiving day before a stretch of games that will see them face I-10 rival UTEP at home, New Mexico in The Pit, UTEP at The Don and then UCLA and Pepperdine on the road all in the next three weeks.

The Aggie football team was the latest to join the list of WAC teams to be steamrolled by Nevada. The Aggies lost 63-20 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score. First the bad. Nevada made history by becoming the first team to have three 1,000 yard rushers on one team as Luke Lippincott rumbled 32 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark. Nevada rushed for a season high 574 yards (also the most in the NCAA this season). Nevada had seven rushing touchdowns and averaged 9.4 yards per rush (although at times it certainly seemed like more). After fumbling on their first play from scrimmage in the first quarter, the Wolf Pack had a stretch of 10 plays in which they scored four touchdowns. Probably as efficient as you can get. The Aggie defense did make Nevada earn the rest of their touchdowns but by that point it was way too little, way too late.

But it wasn't all gloom and doom for the Aggies as they forced a couple of Wolf Pack fumbles and capitalized on both turnovers. Bigger still for the Aggies was the fact that with 9:37 left to go in the game, the Aggies ended their nearly 21 quarter long touchdown-less drought when Jeff Fleming hit Marcus Anderson in the corner of the end zone for the Aggies' first offensive touchdown since the 7:34 mark of the third quarter against Utah State.

The Aggies added a second touchdown with 17 seconds left to play and the Aggie offense now heads to San Jose State with some confidence. Jeff Fleming looked a lot more confident than he has in previous games and had several balls that were dropped or just went off the hands of his receivers otherwise he might have had a great day.
