The Daily Aggie :: 11/21/09

The Aggie women's basketball team picked up an impressive victory on Friday night over Long Beach State. The Aggies trailed 29-25 at halftime but surged ahead after a 7-0 run to start the second half. The Aggies had been having trouble coming out of the second half in the previous two games. "That first spurt at the start of the second half that forced them to call the timeout really turned it in our favor. We didn't do that the first two games, we were real lethargic," said Coach Spence after the game.

After the 7-0 run by the Aggies, Long Beach State tied the game at 34 and then the Aggies went on an 18-2 run to take a 52-36 lead and they would never be threatened the remainder of the game. The Aggies held their largest lead of 21 at 62-41 with 6:36 left to play. The 49ers cut the lead to 10 points with 2:43 left to play but it was too little, too late for LBSU as the Aggies salted the game away at the free throw line hitting five of six free throws over the final 2:21.

Crystal BoydCrystal Boyd had a bit of a breakout game for the Aggies as she scored 17 points on 8-of-21 shooting and really showcased her athleticism on defense, intercepting passes as she anticipated the offense's next moves, finishing with six steals, and on offense as she blew by a couple defenders on drives. Madison Spence had a bit of an off night shooting, recording just 12 points, but she was 4-of-4 from the free throw line and had a near double-double grabbing nine rebounds. Danisha Corbett cooled off a bit from the three point line hitting just 2-of-7 three point attempts but she grabbed four rebounds and had two assists.

The Aggie defense forced 29 turnovers while committing just 16 of their own. The Aggies held Long Beach State to just 24.2 percent shooting in the second half and just 31.7 percent for the game. The Aggies shot 28.6 percent in the first half but shot 42.4 percent in the second half and shot 35.3 percent for the game and continued the trend of winning games in which they hold opponents to under 40 percent shooting.

This was a solid win over a veteran Long Beach State squad. As we mentioned yesterday, the 49ers had started four seniors and a junior in their first two games. The 49ers switched the starting lineup a bit last night but the Aggies were still able to come away with the victory and held Long Beach State's Karina Figueroa to a "quiet" 20 points as most of her damage came in the second half, after the Aggies had the game well under control.

The Aggies will take on North Dakota on Monday night at the Pan Am.

The Aggie men's basketball team takes the court at 2:00 p.m. against Oklahoma Panhandle State University. OPSU should be no trouble for our Aggies but what we'd like to see (as the coaches would also probably like to see) is a solid defensive effort from the Aggies for a full 40 minutes. One of the biggest issues for the Aggies has been on defensive end. The Aggies need to have a defensive performance that sees them hold an inferior opponent to under 40 percent or even 35 percent shooting. Against a weaker Western New Mexico squad, the Aggies allowed the Mustangs to score 83 points and two of their players scored over 20 points (24 and 23) and they shot 43 percent from the field.

Today's game gets underway at 2:00 p.m. MT and can be heard on KGRT 103.9 FM. Streaming audio and streaming video will also be available via Aggie Access (subscription required).

Jeff FlemingThe Aggie football team takes the field at home for the final time this season against Nevada. The Aggies and Wolf Pack kick off at 8:30 p.m. and the game will be on ESPNU. The Aggies and Wolf Pack have played two very competitive games each of the past two seasons with each team winning on the others' home field.

The Aggies are hoping to reverse that trend tonight and have their work cut out for them. The Aggies will have to stop one of the hottest teams in the country and in the process, must figure out a way to slow down Colin Kaepernick and the Wolf Pack rushing offense. The Pack is just 134 Luke Lippincot rushing yards away from having three 1,000 yard rushers on the same team, something that has never been done before in NCAA history. The Wolf Pack are on a seven game winning streak and have crushed their opponents in those seven games averaging 50 points per game in those victories. In the previous three WAC games, all wins, the Wolf Pack have outscored their opponents 145-42.

The Aggies' offensive struggles have been well documented. They have failed to score an offensive touchdown since the third quarter against Utah State, a span of just over 17 quarters. The Aggies must get out to a fast start and end that drought if they are to have any shot at winning tonight. This will be the third straight game that Jeff Fleming will get the start at quarterback. Fleming played every snap last week against Hawai'i and perhaps a third full week of reps with the first team will help him and the offense establish a groove. As always, the Aggie running attack will lead the way for the Aggies, but Nevada has been strong on the defensive side and their weakness as explained by Dan Hinxman of the Reno Gazette-Journal in this week's Know The Foe, is their pass defense. This could be the game that the Aggies get things on track through the air.

Once again, tonight's game will start at 8:30 p.m. and will be aired on ESPNU and as a result the streaming video will be available via ESPN360.com. The game can be heard on KGRT 103.9 FM and streaming audio will be available via Aggie Access (subscription required).
