Aggie Soccer Comes From Behind To Win 2-1 Over Northwestern State

Courtney Irwin scored the game winning goal in the 81st minuteThe Aggie soccer team rallied in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over Northwestern State on Sunday morning. The Aggies and Lady Demons went into halftime tied 0-0. NSU's Sarah Sadler scored the match's first goal on a header off a corner kick in the 51st minute. The Aggies rebounded with a goal in the 68th minute on a penalty kick by Jazmin Cardosa and then Courtney Irwin scored her first goal of the season in the 81st minute to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead which would hold up. "They [NSU] went up 1-0, we did a good job of getting in the penalty box and getting a penalty kick," said Coach Needham. "Then Courtney Irwin scores the first goal of her career on a corner. The ball went in and then came back and and Court was able to get on the end of it and bang it into the net."

"It was a good match. It was actually a soccer game today and that suits us. We were able to play a little bit and get the ball on the ground. It was a very even game," said Coach Needham after the victory. The Aggies finish non-conference play at 5-5 and Coach Needham was pleased with being able to get to .500 heading into conference play. "I'm very happy to be able to get to .500 going into conference." Coach Needham's goal for the Aggies was to have them playing their best heading into conference play and Coach Needham feels like the Aggies have accomplished that goal. "The goal at the beginning of the year was if I could say today that this was the best soccer we played all year. I would say it was pretty darn close. We did a good job today."

The Aggie defense was solid again and senior goal keeper Katie Graul was strong once again for the Aggies with eight saves and just one goal allowed. "Katie Graul saved us pretty big at least two times, maybe three. She does a good job for us and makes big saves," said Coach Needham of his goal keeper. "Our back four is getting more and more together and starting to communicate more and keeping balls out of the back of the net."

The Aggies have won five of their past seven matches after losing their first three to start the season. The Aggies host Boise State on Friday night and then Idaho on Sunday afternoon.
