DENTON, TX - The New Mexico State volleyball team (3-0) swept the University of North Texas to win the Mean Green Volleyball Classic at the Mean Green Volleyball Center in Denton, Texas, Saturday, Aug. 29.
The Aggies, who placed senior Krista Altermatt (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and junior Kayleigh Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) on the all-tournament team, held their opponent to a .083 hitting percentage. NM State hit .265 as a team and spread the ball around to pick up 46 kills.
Sophomore Kelsi Phillips (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the way defensively again for NM State with 14 digs as the Aggies struggled at the net picking up only four team blocks on the night.
"We didn't play great defense but we will work at it and get better," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Kelsi (Phillips) has been doing great for us. She has improved her serve-receive and gives the team great energy. She is living up to her potential."
NM State won set one 25-18 behind the strong arm of Brennan. She posted five kills and committed only one error on six attempts. Woods was the first Aggie to record a kill in the match during a run that put her team up 6-3. After Brennan got her first kill of the match, Woods picked up her first career ace. Brennan started another point run, which gave her team a demanding 14-6 lead. Altermatt pounded the ball down to the floor to give NM State a 20-13 lead and the Aggies rode the momentum to the win.
The Aggies claimed set two 25-21 hitting .406 as a team, while committing one four errors. Giddens led the charge offensively putting down four kills. Phillips added four digs in set two after she posted five in the first set. NM State went down 1-0 but went on a 4-0 run that was topped off with a Giddens kill. The Mean Green stayed with the Aggies and got to within one at 10-9 before Giddens got another outstanding kill to put NM State up by two. The Aggies got a three point lead at 18-15. It was the seventh time in the set NM State went up by three. The Aggies got over the hump and went up by four when Brennan picked up her sixth kill of the match. After Giddens got kill No. 9 of the match, UNT committed an error to give NM State a five point win.
NM State wrapped up the tournament with a 25-14 win in set three. Giddens led the way with six kills in the set. Up 4-3, NM State went on a 3-0 run with a kills from Woods, Altermatt and an ace from Bryanna Brown (Rio Rancho, N.M.). The Aggies continued to pull away taking a 21-13 lead when Brennan earned kill No. 9 of the evening. Senior Kelli Goodan (Des Moines, N.M.) got in the game and finished off the Mean Green with her first kill of the season as she nurses a knee injury.
Next, the Aggies host the NM State Volleyball Tournament, Sept. 4-5 and will feature No. 10 Illinois and Florida State as opponents. NM State's first match in the tournament is against Florida State, Friday, Sept. 4 in the Pan American Center at 7 p.m. (MDT). The match will be broadcast on the radio at KSNM AM 570 with Kyle Doperalski giving the play-by-play action.
