The Daily Aggie :: 08/09/09

The Aggie volleyball team got their fall practice underway with the start of two-a-days yesterday. Be sure to check out photos from yesterday's first practice courtesy of Rich Chavez (for more photos visit Rich's gallery). We also talked with Coach Jordan after the morning session to get his initial thoughts on the first session. The Aggies are a very very young team with just four upperclassmen, Erin Birmingham (SR), Krista Altermatt (SR), Kelli Goodan (SR) and Whitney Woods (JR) who saw significant playing time last season. Also returning for the Aggies are sophomores Jennah DeVries and Kelsey Brennan. In total the Aggies have 14 freshman and sophomores on the squad with clearly the biggest hole to fill being Krystal Torres' libero position.

The three seniors, Krista Altermatt, Kelli Goodan and Erin Birmingham will be relied upon heavily to help guide this very young and talented squad. We spoke with them after yesterday's morning session and we'll have that interview available tomorrow.

The Aggies have a less weeks until they open the season in Denton, TX against SMU, Northern Colorado and North Texas.

The Aggie football team will don full pads today for the first time. Practice starts at 3:00 p.m. and is of course open to the public. Teddy Feinberg of the Las Cruces Sun-News attended yesterday's practice and blogged his thoughts. One player that has caught both ours and Teddy's eye is wide receiver Darrius Preston. In the limited amount of time we've spent watching practice we've noticed that Preston can stretch the field vertically and seems to be able to create good separation between himself and his defender late in the route. He could be a very exciting player to watch this fall.

Teddy also has a story on Aggie senior linebacker Jamar Cotton. We don't know Jamar personally we have seen him around town and run into him a few times. Jamar was always spoken highly of by the previous staff and one thing we've observed from Jamar is that he is a very well spoken, polite and courteous young man, something that we've sure has not gone unnoticed by either the previous coaching staff or the current coaching staff. Cotton also excels in the classroom. Last fall he earned the Academic Momentum Award from the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. He was one of 63 nominees from 39 schools. He also made the Academic All-WAC teams in 2007 and 2008. He's one of those kids that you can really root for.
