The Aggie women's basketball team released their 2009/2010 schedule yesterday. A couple of quick thoughts on the schedule. One, it might be the most fair conference schedule the Aggies have had since joining the WAC. For the first time in three seasons the Aggies will not have to play an opponent in back-to-back games. In the 2006/2007 season they played Fresno State at home (the buzzer beater game) then had to turn around and play them in their very next game (Fresno State had to play one other opponent, San Jose State in back to back games that season as well) and last season the Aggies faced Hawai'i at home and then faced them on the road in the very next game. Coincidentally the past two seasons the Aggies' opponent in the regular season finale has also been their opponent in the opening round of the WAC Tournament (Hawai'i in '08, La. Tech in '09).
This coming season the Aggies also only play back to back road games twice, to start the season (at CS-Northridge and at Cal Poly) and once in conference play (at Fresno State then at Hawai'i). And in almost a direct opposite situation from last season, the Aggies will play seven straight home games from November 20th through December 15th (last season the Aggies played six consecutive road games).
One final thought, we haven't seen the entire league schedule but just based off the conference schedule the Aggies play, it appears that the league may have finally put together a schedule that is balanced (i.e. the Aggies won't have a situation where they'll face an opponent twice within the span of two weeks or less). Here's hoping the rest of the league schedule pans out the way the Aggies' did.

More backlash from the Mountain West's and WAC's decision to re-sign with the BCS. To be fair, the Mountain West was the conference raising all the stink about the unfairness of the BCS, the WAC got lumped in there last minute when the deadline approached and it appeared that the two leagues might make a stand of solidarity in not re-signing the BCS agreement. Unfortunately all the ranting and raving by the MWC and Utah senator Orrin Hatch will go by the wayside.
Fanhouse's Clay Travis says it all in his article: But it wasn't just the money. The Mountain West and the WAC both felt that if their teams were excluded from the BCS, they'd be doing their student-athletes a disservice. Of course, by accepting the money, they ensured that they were also doing their student athletes a disservice.
The lesson here: It's better to be complicit in the exclusion of your football programs than to withdraw from an unfair system that doesn't allow you to compete for the ultimate prize. Sin of omission, meet sin of commission.
Was it a good decision to re-up with the BCS? We have no idea. However, we do agree with Travis that the MWC and WAC's best bargaining chip for modifying the current system or creating a new system more inclusive and equitable for the non-BCS leagues and teams has been effectively tossed out.
