The Daily Aggie :: 07/07/09

As was mentioned last night, the Aggie women's basketball team has found their assistant head coach. The Aggies will enter the 2009/2010 season with high expectations. A season after having one of the youngest teams in the country, they will have solid experience and while they will still be a young squad with just one senior on the roster they will have a wealth of experience coming back from last season. The Aggies' schedule includes a home date with Kansas, who will very likely be a Top 15 or Top 10 school when the Jayhawks visit Las Cruces in January.

Former Aggie standout Justin Hawkins has landed on the NBA Champion L.A. Lakers' summer league roster (thanks to Dan for the tip).

While we're on the subject of men's basketball, NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand has written an informative article regarding the often talked about "One and Done" rule. One fact that Dr. Brand is quick to point out is that the rule was created by the NBA and Players' Association and not the NCAA (although many sports journalists think the two organizations are in cahoots).

Ferd Lewis of the Honolulu Advertiser has a couple of very interesting articles regarding Hawai'i and their situation. One pertains to UH's membership in the WAC as they are the senior member of the conference (and how despite all the fans' wishing a new conference isn't in the cards) and the other article is about the difficulty of trying to find a sport to cut to help their budget deficit. Many smaller schools are cutting sports to help defray increased budget cuts and one BCS school, Stanford, was considering cutting some of its 35 sports.
