LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team will sport a newly designed football helmet in 2009, as head coach DeWayne Walker has moved back to the all crimson helmet, which will feature the NM State logo on the side. The helmet will feature a white face mask. Also on the back of the helmet will be the logo of the 2nd Engineer Battalion out of White Sands, as the Aggies honor the battalion for their service to our country.
"We changed the helmet because we wanted to change the look," Head Coach Dewayne Walker said. "We wanted to try and create some consistency and establish a traditional look like a USC or Nebraska. The players input was important in this decision and I took their opinion into consideration. We wanted to create a look that will be identified with NM State football for years to come and we hope the community, students and faculty embrace this new look."

How do we build tradition when every new coach has his own version of "tradition". NMSU should put together a panel, pick a design, a color of crimson on white, or white on crimson (with no black or any other color) and stick with it for 30 or 40 years - now that would create a tradition. Lastly NMSU can market "Aggies" a lot easier than "NM State"
I agree with you on the
I agree with you on the whole crimson thing (it'd be nice to even have ONE shade of crimson instead of the 5 or 10 that we have now). From what I understand the move to designate athletics as NM State instead of NMSU was made to align with the university as a whole because the university created a unified move from the Triangles logo to the 'NM State' on the crimson state of New Mexico logo back in 2005.
What's kind of amusing is that the switch to the white helmets and current jerseys was supposed to pay homage to some of the earlier teams that had similar uniforms. I for one like the uniforms design that we currently have.

Thanks for the note. I agree that crimson comes in every shade. The additional problem with crimson helmets are that no matter how hard they try, that bright painted crimson will not match the cloth uniform, no matter what, whereas white is white and matches whatever crimson they put on the uniforms. I agree, the present uniforms are the best they have been in years, but I am sure there is no stopping the change. I remember in the 1970's when the Aggies went from Crimson and White during the Charlie Johnson era to bright red and white, with accent of powder blue down the sides of the jerseys. No wonder we have no tradition.
