DENVER, CO - New Mexico State junior Sophia Marks has been named the WAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for April 6-12, as was released by the conference office Monday. This is the first player of the week honor for Marks, who was a second team all-WAC performer last year for the Aggies in both singles and doubles.
Head coach Don Ball said that Marks has been the most steady and successful player on a team that has had its ups and downs because of injuries.
"To have the success that she's had playing at the No. 1 position and playing against a very tough schedule that we've faced speaks volumes for how great of a player she is," Ball said. "She has been playing great for us and to basically play even, as she lost in a third set tiebreaker, with one of the nation's best players is outstanding. We are thrilled for her and excited she received this honor."
Marks, a junior from Grantham, England (Univ. of Lincoln), led the Aggie women's tennis team to a 2-1 record last weekend with wins over Utah State and Louisiana Tech. She went 2-1 in her singles matches and 2-1 in her doubles matches.
Combining her two singles victories, she only lost a total of one game as she beat USU's and La Tech's No. 1 players. In her only loss, Marks nearly pulled off an upset of Melanie Gloria, who is the No. 14-ranked singles player in the nation from 15th-ranked Fresno State. Marks fell to Gloria, 6-2, 2-6, 10-3.
In doubles play, Marks along with teammate Aleksa Costa, went 2-1 together and their only loss came to the nation's top-ranked singles team from Fresno State. In their two victories, they only lost one total game.
