FLAGSTAFF, AZ - The New Mexico State women's golf team placed second while four players placed in the top-10 at the La Quinta Mountain Shootout in Flagstaff, Ariz. on Tuesday, September 18.

NMSU fired 106 pars as a team, to fire a 56-over-par 632 and finish in second place; just one stroke behind host team Northern Arizona. Head coach Paul Brilliant liked how well his team play knowing he has two sophomores and three freshman out on the course.

"We really played good, especially for how young our team is," Brilliant said. "There were some tricky holes on the back nine and we were unable to get used to them in the practice round because of the weather."

Freshman Suterra Chanachai (Bangkok, Thailand) played great firing three birdies for the Aggies and placed second on the individual leader board. She fired a 12-over-par 156, while Northern Arizona's Sophia Choi finished five strokes ahead of her with a 7-over-par 151.

Freshmen Buz Bowerman-Ritchie (Oshawa, Ontario) also did well tying for fifth as she carded a 14-over-par 158 in two rounds that included 24 pars. Sophomores Brittany Collins (Bluffton, S.C.) and Maggie Murphy (Sioux Falls, S.D.) were also in the top-10. They brought in scores of 15-over-par 159 to tie for seventh.

Freshman Apinporn Swaschuto (Bangkok, Thailand) came in with a 30-over-par 174 to tie for 38th.

"Our team is very talented and I think we can only improve from here on out," Brilliant said.

The Aggies will continue their season when they head to Lubbock, Texas for the Jeannie McHaney Invite on Oct.8-9. For more information on the team fans can go to www.nmstatesports.com.
