The Daily Aggie :: 11/07/08

Last night the Aggie volleyball team averted a minor disaster as they rallied from down 2-0 to Nevada to win the final three sets and steal a five set victory over Nevada. We had a bit of an uneasy feeling about last night's match heading in, if only because Nevada has given the Aggies trouble in the past (see last year's game at the Pan Am as a good reference). The Aggies were able to compose themselves after getting dominated 25-19 and 25-17 in the first two sets and destroyed Nevada in sets three and four (25-13 and 25-9) and took a hotly contested 15-10 victory in set five. Kudos to the Wolf Pack for bringing their 'A' game to the gym (at least in the first two sets). After cruising through the past two weeks, the Aggies got a bit of a jolt last night, which is not necessarily a bad thing (although it would have been a bad thing had they lost). We think head coach Mike Jordan has the girls' attention after last night's match and like any good coach, will turn this into a learning experience. This can only mean good things as the Aggies try to close out at least a share of a regular season championship, a WAC tournament championship and make it out of the first round of the NCAA tournament for the first time ever.

Be sure to check out our photos from last night's men's basketball game between the Aggies and Western New Mexico. The Aggies did what the Aggies were supposed to do... blow out Western. Jonathan Gibson led all scorers with 25 points (19 of which he had by halftime). Jahmar Young had 22 points. A few observations from our first look at the men's team. This team is lightning quick. As quick as last year's team was, as quick as Reggie's NCAA team was, this team is that much quicker. Jonathan Gibson looks to have improved even more from last year to this year (great news), Jahmar Young looks to be a leader out there on the floor, his court presence in last night's game was vastly different than last season. Last season he acted like a freshman sometimes in his demeanor. We saw none of that last night and we definitely can see there's been a maturing processes on his part.

The other huge difference we noticed from the Aggies is that at least early on this is a markedly better free throw shooting team than we've seen in a very long time. The Aggies were 13-14 from the line in the first half (although they were only 6-12 in the second half). Of their seven missed free throws, three came from center Hamidu Rahman and two from Tray Britt. There were only a couple things that stood out as things that will probably need to improve as the season starts, one, the Aggies allowed 14 offensive rebounds to a much much much smaller Western New Mexico team and second, the Aggies allowed quite a few wide open looks from beyond the arc (WNMU attempted 30 three pointers). Obviously not all teams are going to shoot that many threes, but if they do, the Aggies need to have a hand in the shooter's face when they do shoot. Other than that, it was a small taste of things to come for the Aggies.

The Aggie football team takes the field tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. for a big game against Hawai'i. The Aggies and Warriors are both fighting for their bowl lives. Tomorrow will be a special day at Aggie Memorial Stadium as the Aggies Salute America's Heroes.

David Holbrook talks about coming out to support the seniors in their final two home games in the latest entry in his blog A View From The Stands. He also discusses the subject of appropriate fan behavior as it relates to supporting our own student-athletes and is a stance we wholeheartedly agree with.

This afternoon we'll have another edition of Know The Foe. We enlisted the help of Hawai'i superfan Tombo Ahi who runs the outstanding website Warriors Will Throw. If it relates to UH football, you'll find it on his site.

Finally, we never thought we'd say this but former Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan, who now plays for the Washington Redskins, has one thing in common with us. His love of In-N-Out Burgers. Anyone that loves In-N-Out can't be all that bad.
