The Daily Aggie :: 10/16/08 :: Afternoon Update

If you were looking for one more reason why Saturday's game against San Jose State is immensely important we have it for you. This this game could determine which of these two teams goes to a bowl game. The WAC has only three bowl tie-ins, the Humanitarian Bowl, the Hawai'i Bowl and the New Mexico Bowl. Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News explains the plight the WAC teams find themselves in and why you should be rooting against BYU tonight. As an Aggie fan, wherever Mr. Wilner mentions SJSU, just replace them with NMSU.

An undefeated BYU could also pose huge problems for San Jose State, which is competing for one of the WAC’s three bowl bids. If Boise State runs the table and jumps into the BCS, it would create a fourth berth for the WAC.

But there’s only one BCS slot reserved for teams from non-BCS conferences, so if Boise State and BYU finish undefeated and both are in the top-12 of the final standings, the higher ranked team would claim the bid.

BYU is expected to be ranked higher than Boise State when the first BCS standings are released Sunday, assuming both teams win this week (BSU plays Hawaii on Friday night).

If the Cougars win out, it stands to reason that they’d remain ahead of the Broncos, especially given the presence of resume-enhancing Utah on BYU’s schedule. (Boise State doesn’t have a resume booster on its schedule because of Fresno State’s loss to Hawaii.)

So undefeated BYU could keep undefeated Boise State out of the BCS, limit the WAC to three bids and knock a seven-win team (SJSU?) out of the postseason.

And while we're on the subject of bowls, Lya Wodroska of the Salt Lake City Tribune reports on her blog that the Mountain West Conference has reached an agreement to send their 5th place team to the Humanitarian Bowl starting in 2009. Of the three bowls the WAC has ties with, two will pit WAC teams against MWC teams. If there wasn't enough angst between these two conferences, this ought to add a little more fuel to the "who's the better conference" fire.
