What a week for Aggie sports. It all started last Tuesday when the men's golf team went to Reno and brought back the title at the Wolf Pack Classic. En route to victory they defeated the #2 and #31 ranked men's golf teams in the country in Tennessee and Kansas State as well as notching a victory over conference rival Nevada. On Saturday the Aggie football team rolled into Nevada and rode out with a 48-45 victory in front of a very cold and very stunned Wolf Pack crowd. Just for reference, Dan Hinxman of the Reno Gazette-Journal had ranked the Pack's game against the Aggies as a 3 of 10 on the degree of difficulty scale. Then last night the Aggie volleyball team capped off the week with a "don't call it stunning" victory over the #6 Wahine in Honolulu. It's not stunning because we've felt even after their 3-0 loss to Hawai'i in Las Cruces that this team could beat the Wahine. In fact we mentioned it yesterday, the Aggies and Wahine both knew after the match in Las Cruces that the Aggies were fully capable of beating the Wahine and they did so last night. The victory also marked the first ever win over a Top 10 team in school history. The Aggies were previously 0 for 69.
We also mentioned yesterday that we've had to deal with some unexpected personal issues this past weekend. It's time for some full disclosure. On Friday doctors found a small malignant tumor on the head of our mom's pancreas, malignant meaning that it's cancerous. Fortunately the doctor believes that the cancer is contained and has not spread and that by removing the tumor they will be removing the cancer. Why are we telling you this? Because it just so happens that this Saturday is the Tough Enough To Wear Pink football/volleyball game. We've been very supportive of this effort, having had an aunt that survived breast cancer, but this year it's a little different. It's a lot more personal. While it's not breast cancer that has affected our lives, it still cancer nonetheless. So please come out on Saturday to both the volleyball match at 3:00 p.m. and the football game at 6:00 p.m., wear pink, if you're able to make a monetary donation, by all means do so. But at the very least show up and support this great cause.
We don't want to sound harsh but It's put up or shut up time for Aggie fans. You've been asking for the Aggies to win before you'll come out and support them, this weekend gave you what you've been asking for. Now it's your turn. Be sure to check out this week's A View From The Stands blog post by David Holbrook. David as he usually does, made the trip to see his son play and was rewarded with a victory that many have felt is a long time coming and touches on the subject of fan support.
Speaking of Chase, both he and defensive lineman Oren Long should receive very strong consideration for WAC Player of the Week Honors. Chase had over 400 yards passing in the victory on Saturday and Oren Long's 80 yard fumble return for a touchdown turned the tide in the game and forced the Pack to play catch up the rest of the game. And of course, don't forget to go cast your vote for Chase in the Davey O'Brien Award fan voting. Chase has closed the gap a little bit and is less than 200 votes behind Chase Daniel. And we've got some more voting for you to do. Chase is also nominated for the USA Today Player of the Week. Go vote! (Thanks Roberto for the link).
And finally if you missed the game, be sure to check out our thoughts from the game (yes, we're not above a little shameless self promotion).
