2008 Blue Ribbon Yearbook Aggie Football Preview :: Defensive Backs

bleedCrimson.net has once again teamed up with Blue Ribbon Yearbook to provide our readers with the college football's most comprehensive preview. Blue Ribbon Yearbook is considered to be the best and most comprehensive publication in college football.

The secondary dropped off significantly last year from 14 interceptions as a team in 2006 to seven, the second-lowest total in the WAC. The Aggies recovered only seven fumbles as well en route to finishing last in the league and No. 113 in the land in turnover margin at minus-1.15.

Senior Derrick Richardson (5-11, 190) is one of three returning starters who hope to rally the troops. The strong safety was second on the team in tackles last year with 108. He did a litany of things for the Aggies, with three tackles for loss, a sack, an interception, four pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. He’s often the last line of defense.

Should he falter or go down, senior Brennan Baiamonte (6-1, 211) will get the call. He appeared in all 13 games, finishing with 12 tackles.

Cornerbacks Davon House (6-0, 168), a junior, who led the team with four interceptions, and junior Chris Woods (5-10, 180) are the keys to the secondary. Woods had 57 tackles and seven pass breakups in eight games. House finished the year with 37 tackles and eight pass breakups in 13 games, giving the Aggies plenty of experience in the back end of the defense.

Expect veteran Vincent Butler (5-10, 188) to fit right in. The senior started five-of-11 games last year, finishing with 29 tackles and two pass breakups.

Junior Fasavalu (6-0, 191) will get a look. The junior played in only one game last year before going down with a season-ending knee injury in the opener with Southeastern Louisiana.

Senior Marvin Betts (5-9, 180) is coming off a redshirt campaign, and red-shirt freshman Ben Bradley (5-10, 183) and sophomore Alphonso Powell (5-9, 182) could see time as well.
