LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State men's golf coach Scott Lieberwirth has been named to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee. The committee's duties include rules changes, selection of regional and championship sites and at-large selections for the regional tournaments. "This is a significant committee to be a part of and I'm honored to have been selected to serve," Lieberwirth said. "I'm currently the only coach on the committee. This group of six individuals has an important job in selecting regional and championship sites for Division I men's golf, as well as considerations on rules changes and at-large selections for regional play. It will be a challenge but I'm looking forward to it." Lieberwirth and the Aggies are coming off a 2010 WAC Championship and an NCAA Regional appearance a year ago. NM State starts competition for the 2010-11 season on Sept. 19-20, at the Gene Miranda Invitational, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico State volleyball team swept Cal State-Bakersfield 25-13, 25-14, 25-11 in NM State's 2010 home opener on Sept. 1 at the Pan American Center. Junior Jennah DeVries manned the setter position while junior Kelsey Brennan, senior Kayleigh Giddens and senior Whitney Woods provided their usual presence up front, as the New Mexico State Aggie volleyball team leaned on their core four. The Aggies moved to 3-1 on the season, while the Roadrunners fell to 0-4. "That core four is great and they're showing pretty good leadership right now," Aggie head coach Mike Jordan said of his veteran players. "But, the new players are pretty athletic and a lot of them have a pretty good idea on how to play already. They bring enthusiasm too. They're fired up to be here, they're excited to play." LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Aggie men's and women's cross country teams open their seasons this Saturday, Sept. 4 at the University of New Mexico's Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque. The Aggie women will begin defense of their 2009 Western Athletic Conference title when twin sisters Courtney and Camille Schultz paced the conference field across the line finishing first and second, respectfully, as freshmen. The men's team will look to improve upon its fourth-place WAC finish last year. Ian Ruybalid returns to lead the NM State men after placing eighth at the conference meet last season as a sophomore. "Our goal is to win the WAC in men's and women's cross country," head coach Orin Richburg said. "We have four of our top six girls returning from a team that won the WAC and all of our top men returning from a team that finished fourth." LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State Athletics Department announced today that the Aggies football team will play BYU in 2011 and 2012 in a home-and-home series. The Aggies will travel to Provo, Utah in 2011 and BYU will return the game in Las Cruces in 2012. "Obviously after losing Boise State for the 2011 and 2012 season, one of our goals was to identify a comparable school so as to get a home and away game," Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston said. "The scheduling alliance allows us to address that issue. I'm also excited because of the significant Mormon presence in Las Cruces and that many people will be able to come to watch a game at New Mexico State, maybe for the first time. I know BYU draws very well, both home and away. This should be a good alliance and certainly over the next couple of years we will have several conversations about additional opportunities." NM State Announces Special Events for 9-11 Game LAS CRUCES - The NM State athletic department is partnering with area military bases and the NM State Air Force and Army ROTC to celebrate and pay tribute to the men and women in the armed forces, as well as the victims of 9-11. This special celebration will take place in the pre-game and halftime activities of the NM State football game against San Diego State on Sept. 11 at 6PM in Aggie Memorial Stadium. This is the season-opener for NM State. Area bases will bring military vehicles for display to the game and a special pre-game fly-over by T-38 Air Force jets is being provided by Holloman Air ForceBase. Throughout the game, video messages from military leaders, service personnel and national leaders will be played on the video board. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The New Mexico State volleyball team swept FloridaA M 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) inside the Al Lawson Center during the Aggies' final match of the Florida State Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Aggies improve to 2-1 on the year; FloridaA M drops to 0-2. NM State finishes the Florida State Invitational with victories over Florida International and FAMU along with a four-set loss to No. 15 Florida State on the Seminoles' home court. NM State hit .386 against FAMU recording 44 kills against just 12 errors. On the other side of the net, FloridaA M posted 26 kills versus 21 miscues. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team held its second scrimmage of fall camp Saturday morning at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Both the offense and defense had several highlights on the day. Head Coach DeWayne Walker was pleased with what he saw on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the Aggies dominated on the negative side of the field, holding the Aggie offense to several 3-and-out drives. Safety Donyae Coleman would intercept quarterback Matt Christian's first pass of the scrimmage, while the defensive line and linebacker corps held the running game at bay. When NM State moved the ball to the plus side of the field the offense took over, scoring multiple touchdowns on the ground and through the air. Tight end Kyle Nelson caught the first touchdown reception of the scrimmage on a 20-yard pass from Christian. Nelson would then catch two more touchdown passes of 15 yards and eight yards. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team continued preparation for San Diego State on Thursday afternoon. The Aggies practiced for a little over two hours. It was a hard hitting day for the Aggies, especially in scout team situations. NM State continued to emphasis special teams and individual position techniques. The Aggies will be back on the field tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. on the NM State football practice fields. Fans will get a chance to meet the NM State football team and coaching staff while obtaining autographs this weekend during Football Fan Day in Memorial Stadium. After the conclusion of the Aggies' scrimmage scheduled for this Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., NM State players and coaches will sign posters at tables set up around the field for all Crimson and White faithful.
